The 'Family Reading Program' is a partnership of Northern Nevada Literacy Council (lead), Job Opportunities in Nevada (JOIN), Sierra Nevada Journeys, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Nevada RSVP, Seniors in Service, Lemelson Academy, Churchill County Library and Grassroots Books.
The program uses a three-pronged approach: increasing parental engagement to achieve third grade reading outcomes, increasing foundational skills to achieve behavioral changes in the family, and parent literacy training. Over the past year, the partnership served 1,420 parent, child and pre-school teacher workshop attendees throughout the UWNNS service area including Washoe, Storey, Mineral, Douglas, Lander, Churchill, Elko, White Pine, Humboldt, Lyon Counties, as well as Carson City, South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village.
The Family Reading Program also offers families and partners access to its video series, which focuses on several subjects including how books work, reading comprehension, and more. Check them out below!
