United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) is investing in the future of our community, starting with our youngest learners. By the age of 3, there is a 30-million-word gap between children from wealthy and poor families. One factor is the amount of time parents and caregivers are able to spend with their children reading and having conversations around the books they enjoy together. Studies show that the vocabulary gap is evident in toddlers, and by 18 months, children from different socio-economic backgrounds display dramatic differences in vocabulary.
UWNNS has invested in programming over the last 5 years to help bridge the gap and take early steps to help both parents and children understand the benefits of reading. One of these programs is the Family Reading Program in partnership with Northern Nevada Literacy Council. The Family Reading Program uses a three-pronged approach: increasing parental engagement, increasing foundational skills to achieve behavioral changes in the family, and parent literacy training. One of the results out of this partnership is a video series that focuses on several subjects including how books work, reading comprehension, and more. Check them out below!
