A Brief History
The three-digit dialing code, 2-1-1, was exclusively assigned to support the distribution of information and referral services by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2000. Following this assignment, the FCC charged each state with establishing its own 2-1-1 system. United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra was an early partner in convening groups interested in developing a 2-1-1 system in Nevada, bringing together nonprofits, state and local agencies, and other interested individuals and organizations.
United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra, Help of Southern Nevada and Crisis Call Center jointly operated the 2-1-1 system from 2006 until 2015; the system has been operated by the Financial Guidance Center since 2015. United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra continues to provide outreach for 2-1-1 throughout its thirteen-county region in northern Nevada.
